Our history
The company known as J.L. Stewart and Son Pty Ltd had its humble beginning in the years following the Great Depression, when John Stewart, affectionately known as "Honest John", started supplying bakers and pastrycook with edible tallow. He laid the foundations for the business with his sound policies and business practice.
John continued trading in the difficult times of the war years, and his truck was readily recognisable by the massive gas bag that surmounted his vehicle. Because of the scarcity of petrol coupons, town gas was the alternative fuel.
Following the cessation of hostilities, his son Gordon joined the firm bringing his skills as an accountant. He extended the range of products and scope of the business, necessitating the acquisition of larger premises in Lidcombe.
In 1973, following in the family tradition, Peter became the third generation of Stewarts to join the organization, bringing with him new business skills, particularly in the field of computerisation. Under his guidance as managing director the company quickly expanded, outgrowing two warehouses, increasing the range of products to in excess of 3000 and servicing customers from the Victorian border through to Queensland.
